Azamgarh at a Glance

The name was Azamgarh was christened for the district, after the town headquarters, of the same name. It was founded by Azam, son of Vikramjit, in the year 1665. A descendant of Gautam Rajputs of Mehnagar in Pargana Nizamabad, Vikramjit had embraced Islam like some of his ancestors. He had two sons Azam and Azmat from his Muhammadan wife. The town of Azamgarh and the fort is named after the legendary Azam, while Azmat built the fort and established the Azmatgarh bazaar in Pargana Sagri.
